Friday 19 June 2026 19th June - Terrific tennis! This week in Year 1, the children have thoroughly enjoyed developing their tennis skills during PE lessons. They focused on learning how to hold the racket correctly by imagining they were “shaking hands” with it — a helpful technique to encourage the correct grip and build confidence when handling the racket. The children practised controlling the ball and explored using both forehand and backhand shots, concentrating on positioning and accuracy. They then had great fun applying these new skills through floor tennis games in pairs, where they worked collaboratively, encouraged one another and demonstrated excellent teamwork and perseverance.

Friday 15 May 2026 15th March - there's something fishy going on... In Literacy, we have been continuing our learning about poetry and writing list poems based on Clare Bevan's Queue for the Zoo poem. We explored how poets use exciting verbs to make their writing more interesting and help the reader imagine the animals moving. The children thought carefully about different zoo animals and chose verbs to describe their movements, such as “slither like a snake”, “stomp like an elephant” and “swing like a monkey”. The children enjoyed performing their ideas aloud and using actions to match the movements. We are looking forward to publishing our own zoo poems and sharing them with the children in Reception.

Friday 8 May 2026 8th May - Powerful poetry! This week in Literacy, Year 1 have continued exploring poems. We have really enjoyed working together to create our own rhyming poem. We used the Caribbean counting poem as inspiration and then combined all of our ideas to create a fantastic class poem. We are looking forward to rehearsing our poem and performing it to another year group next week.

Friday 1 May 2026 1st May - all about the animals! This week in Science, we have been learning all about vertebrates and how animals can be grouped into different animal groups. We focused on reptiles and discussed their characteristics. We learned that reptiles are vertebrates with scaly skin, they are cold-blooded, and most reptiles lay eggs. We also discovered that reptiles breathe air using lungs and usually live on land.
