19th June - Terrific tennis!
This week in Year 1, the children have thoroughly enjoyed developing their tennis skills during PE lessons. They focused on learning how to hold the racket correctly by imagining they were “shaking hands” with it — a helpful technique to encourage the correct grip and build confidence when handling the racket. The children practised controlling the ball and explored using both forehand and backhand shots, concentrating on positioning and accuracy. They then had great fun applying these new skills through floor tennis games in pairs, where they worked collaboratively, encouraged one another and demonstrated excellent teamwork and perseverance.
In Literacy, we have continued our exciting work based on Little Red and the Hungry Lion by Alex T. Smith. The children have been becoming authors themselves by innovating the story and changing key elements to create their own imaginative versions. Together, we explored how changing the setting and characters can transform a familiar tale into something completely new. One of our favourite adaptations included replacing the hungry lion with a polar bear and sending Little Red on an adventure through a beach setting instead of a forest. The children generated wonderful ideas, used rich vocabulary and thought carefully about how these changes would affect the story. It has been lovely to see their creativity flourish and their confidence grow as storytellers.
