1st May - all about the animals!

This week in Science, we have been learning all about vertebrates and how animals can be grouped into different animal groups. We focused on reptiles and discussed their characteristics. We learned that reptiles are vertebrates with scaly skin, they are cold-blooded, and most reptiles lay eggs. We also discovered that reptiles breathe air using lungs and usually live on land.

Later in the week, we explored birds and their characteristics. We learned that birds have feathers, wings and beaks, and that they are warm-blooded animals. We also found out that all birds lay eggs and that many birds can fly, although some cannot. The children enjoyed sorting animals into the correct groups and discussing the features that help us identify them.

In Literacy, we completed our letter writing unit. To finish the topic, we wrote thoughtful thank you letters to members of our school community. We focused on using the features of a letter, including greetings and sign-offs, and worked hard to include question sentences and question marks correctly in our writing.

We have now moved on to poetry and have started learning and reciting poems by Michael Rosen and Julia Donaldson. We are looking forward to identifying rhyming words and exploring list poems over the coming weeks.
