Friday 13th March - Fire, Fire, Fire!

A Week of Firefighters and Pond Discoveries!

This week in Year 2 we have had a very exciting and memorable time, as much of our learning has been based around the Great Fire of London. The children have been exploring what happened in 1666 and thinking about how different life was at that time.

We were extremely lucky to have a very special visitor come to speak to us. A real firefighter, Mr Tshoukas, kindly came into school straight after finishing a night shift to tell us all about what it is like to be a firefighter. He brought lots of his real equipment with him and explained how each piece helps firefighters do their important job. The children loved being able to see the equipment up close and some even had the chance to try parts of it on! We are incredibly grateful to Mr Tshoukas for giving up his time to share such an informative and inspiring talk with us.

To help us understand what fighting fires might have been like during the Great Fire of London, the children took part in a fun experiment. They worked together to “put out a fire” using squirt guns. This helped us imagine what it must have been like in 1666, when people did not have modern fire engines or trained firefighting teams. Instead, they only had simple tools such as water pistols, buckets and fire hooks. The activity helped the children realise why it took such a long time for the fire to be brought under control, and it was a real eye-opening experience.

In Science, we also spent some time exploring our wonderful school grounds. The children visited the school pond and went pond dipping. They were investigating how animals survive in a pond habitat and discovered a variety of fascinating pond creatures. After our exploration, the children used what they had found to help them create food chains, showing how different animals in the pond environment depend on one another to survive. They also created their own pond crafts to represent what a pond habitat looks like.

It has been a fantastic week full of hands-on learning, curiosity and discovery. The children have asked some brilliant questions and shown great enthusiasm throughout all of our activities. Well done Year 2!

Have a wonderful weekend all,

Mrs Clewley
